After six years away from Formula One, today at Valencia’s Ricardo Tormo Circuit, Polish driver Robert Kubica undertook a private test for Renault Sport Formula One Team, driving a Renault Sport F1 Team E20 chassis.
Robert wasted very little time behind the wheel of the E20, pounding around the circuit and completing an astonsihing 115 laps on his return. Considering the horrific injuries that Kubica sustained six years ago – and long and often painful recovery taken to get to this point – his acheivement today is nothing short of remarkable.
Robert Kubica has been sorely missed in the Formula One Paddock since his accident. His natural ability and skill were first seen during his role at BMW Sauber F1 Team, firstly as a test and development driver and then promoted up to the full time driving roster. Of course it shouldn’t be forgotten that Kubica scored the only victory for the BMW Sauber marque and was in contention for the 2008 Formula One World Championship – before BMW Sauber decided to switch development to the 2009 car.
Will we see Kubica back in Formula One full time? It’s too early to tell.
But it sure would be incredible to have Kubica back!
